A new series of images has been added to the gallery list featuring the canals of Amsterdam in Holland (the Nehterlands). Click the image above or one of the links to view the new gallery.

Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands, has more than one hundred kilometres of canals, about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges.

The three main canals, Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht, dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, form concentric belts around the city, known as the Grachtengordel. Alongside the main canals are 1550 monumental buildings.

The 17th-century canal ring area, including the Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht and Jordaan, were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010.

I know, I know… it is spring and almost summer and I am posting autumn photos.

Nevertheless I wanted to share these two edits of the same image. The photo was taken in the east parts of the Netherlands in the Bergher forest (Bergherbos) near the city of Zeddam.

Which one do you prefer, the color or black and white one?

The photo for the January 2012 wallpaper was taken in the village Volendam in the province Noord-Holland in the Netherlands.

A traditional Dutch windmill is marking one of the entry roads to the old fishing village. Volendam is not only well known for its eel fishing, but also for a long line of successful and popular musicians and singers. The Volendam style music is often referred to as the eel-sound!

Getting back to work today after having had a wonderful holiday with some beach time?

Well, here is an opportunity to extend that beach time while being back at work, the August 2011 wallpaper!

Four months ago I let you choose the April 2011 wallpaper among various alternatives. The above photo came up as #2 in that list and so I decided to make it the August 2011 wallpaper. The photo was taken on the Dutch west coast near Schoorl. Hope you enjoy it!

Windmill near Volendam, Noord-Holland

Due to family reasons I am currently spending some time away from home and back in my country of birth, the Netherlands.

Although I have visited the Netherlands the past years frequently I never spent much time to seriously photograph it. Actually, some Dutch cows are currently the only gallery in my portfolio from the country I lived in for more than 30 years (you can view them here).

Now that I have lived abroad for many years it seems that I view my previous home with different eyes. While I was living there it would not have had my preference to go out and shoot some images in stormy and cloudy weather, but it was different two weeks ago.

There was a heavy storm with very strong winds and regular rainfall a few weekends ago. Flights from Schiphol airport were delayed or even canceled and traffic on the roads was seriously effected. These were the conditions I went out with my camera (I did not even bother to take my tripod with me) and shot the attached photos.
